Just had an interesting conversation with my Aunt Sophia who is visiting her sister, my mother. Aunt Sophia is from Italy. Although she has a working knowledge of English, some things get lost in the translation. For example, she was watching TV last Wednesday while my Mother was grocery shopping and happened to stumble upon the broadcast of the Charter School Board meeting. She called me after the meeting was over expressing concern about an exchange that took place. The conversation went like this.
Aunt Sophia: Come siete?
Paco: I am well Aunt Sophia. How are you?
Aunt Sophia: Molto bene. Grazie. I hava question for you if you have soma time.
Paco: Of course. I always have time for my favorite Aunt.
Aunt Sophia: Siete troppo gentili. I wasa watching thea school boarda meeting when Iya hear one of the men saya somebody’s personal anus ina quagamire, or something lika that. It soundsa to me lika somebody isa, how you saya, constipated.
Paco: I know they’ve said some strange things at those meetings, Aunt Sophia, but that seems quite out of the ordinary. Do you recall who said it?
Aunt Sophia: Somebody name assa, assa, assa something. I’m nota sure.
Paco: Asfour?
Aunt Sophia: Yes. Thatsa him.
Paco: Well, Asfour has said some controversial things before, but nothing like that. Who was he talking about?
Aunt Sophia: I’m nota sure. But another man, Stewart, he saya something and then the Assafour man say he was nota talking abouta him.
Paco: I will watch the replay of the meeting Aunt Sophia and let you know what I think they were talking about.
Aunt Sophia: Grazie. They have enougha to worry about withouta being also constipated. I have Italian remedy for them if theya need it. Cleans you out reala good. Make you go like a goose.
Paco: Thank you Aunt Sophia. I’ll be sure to let them know.
I can’t wait to catch the replay of the charter school board meeting. It must have been a very cleansing experience for those in attendance. I certainly hope they flushed out all their issues. I knew they had problems, but didn’t know constipation was one of them. On the other hand, based upon some of the things they have said and done, constipation could be the least of their problems.

Speaking of the C word, I’m “afeared” that the editorial writer at The Light Wind has a bit of a problem, especially after reading the editorial in today’s edition. He/she/it praised Terry Stewart for looking out for the City of Cape Coral by making the decision to remain in Cape Coral following the Broward County Board of County Commissioners decision to postpone interviewing the three candidates on their short list, including Stewart.
After reading the editorial, I looked up the definition of naïve in my trusty Webster’s dictionary and was amazed when I read: “The writer of the editorial in the Saturday, January 14, 2006 edition of The Cape Coral Breeze”. I then looked up the word delusional. Believe it or not, Webster’s said: “See naïve”.
Speaking of naïve, it is a strong possibility that the editorial was written by a woman. If that’s the case, it’s no small wonder why many men believe we can be duped by a wink and a tickle. It was, by far, the worst piece of fluff I have ever read. If the writer is indeed a woman, she should apologize to womankind for allowing herself be hoodwinked. However, if the editorial writer is a man…well that explains everything.
With that said, please allow me to tell you the real reason why Stewart “withdrew” his name from consideration.
The search firm provided the Broward County Commissioners with three names. The commissioners originally scheduled interviews, but decided to postpone them. One of the reasons given for the postponement was that the Board did not believe three candidates was a large enough applicant pool and should be expanded to include more.
That is the old standby copout and I don’t buy it. If I had applicants for a position, one of which stood out above the rest, I would hire that person in a heartbeat, even though the applicant pool consisted of only two people. Anybody that possessed a modicum of common sense would do the same.
Stewart, claiming that he was concerned that the City of Cape Coral was being placed in a difficult position because of the uncertainty surrounding his leaving, magnanimously withdrew his application. He stated in his letter to the search firm: “After careful consideration of the foregoing, and more importantly, in light of professional concerns about fairness to my current employer, the City of Cape Coral, I believe it is best that I withdraw my name from consideration for this position”.
Holy Upchuck, Batman!!! Does anybody, other than the “bubble haid” who wrote The Light Wind Editorial, truly believe Stewart withdrew his name because of his concern for the City? If you believe that one, you must also believe George W. Bush didn’t break the law when he authorized the NSA to spy on Americans.
Lemme ‘splain exactly what happened. Please pay attention, Light Wind editorial writer. When potential employers decide to expand an applicant pool, regardless of what they say, it is because they are not happy with the applicants they have and would not choose any of them, period. Stewart realized that he was not going to get the job, period. Therefore, not wanting to be rejected, he decided to withdraw, rather than be embarrassed by that rejection, period. That’s as obvious as the size of his ego, which is humongous. His withdrawal, is very similar to an employee saying, “I quit”, immediately after he’s been fired.
It’s too bad that the powers that be at The Light Wind don’t understand the obvious. Then again, perhaps that mentality is why the Saturday edition of their newspaper has to be given away, instead of sold, only to remain in driveways and on streets for days at a time.
The fact that Stewart even considered leaving should send a clear message to the idiots on the City Council who support him, like His Dishonorableness II, Mayor Eric “Phony” Feichthaler. Stewart has made some bonehead decisions, most notably keeping things secret from the City Council. Trust me, he will continue to act like he’s in charge as long as he can count to five, which is the number of people it will take to boot his butt back to Broward.

Speaking of keeping things quiet, has Stewart done it again? I see where the Charter High School is now in jeopardy because of permitting and cost of construction problems. The questions that should be asked of Stewart include: (1) How long have you known that there was a problem with financing the high school and securing the appropriate permits? and; (2) What have you been doing about it? Something has obviously slipped through the cracks and the City Council once again looks like it had no clue. Oh well, as my Aunt Sophia would say, “stessi vecchi, stessi vecchi”.
Then again, some members of the City Council will probably try to put their own spin on the issue and blame anybody and everybody but Stewart. Befooled Bertolini sounds like the perfect candidate for that assignment.
And now, emails from readers.
Dear Paco,
I read that former Mayor Kempe agrees with Councilman Jeffers about the cost of the School Resource Officers. What do you think that means?
A.G.
Dear A.G.
Check to see if the sky has gotten a bit closer.
Dear Paco,
I read the Cape Coral Breeze editorial that heaped praise on the City Manager. Doesn’t The Breeze make a considerable amount of money from publishing the City’s public notices?
T.H.
Dear T.H.
Could that be the “rest of the story”?
Dear Paco,
Do you think anybody in Cape Coral sabotaged Stewart’s chances of getting the Broward County job?

Dear C.P.
If that’s the case, they can run, but they can’t hide.
Whether you’re running and/or hiding, vous l'avez entendu à travers le Capevine.
